Marienplatz and Schweinshaxe

December 29th, we get up and it's SNOWING in Nurnburg!  But it's time to get on the road, heading south.  This day was a repositioning day, as we moved ourselves down to the German/Austrian border.

As we were driving south, we saw a sign for the city of Ingolstadt.  The city name sounded familiar to me, so we googled it and it's the home and headquarters of Audi!

We hoped to get a factory tour, or at least see the visitor's center, but, alas, closed for the weeks around the holidays.  Bummer

As we headed south into the German Alps, we were skirting around Munich, when we decided to go into town.  I directed us right to the famed Marienplatz!

The highlight of the day was lunch at the Rathskeller underneath the main Rathaus.

I ordered the Nurnberger Wurst, which turns out to be the same as Jimmy Dean sausage in the United States.

Onions ordered the Schweinshaxe, which is known as the "pigs knuckle" or ham hock.  It's the the part of the pigs leg just above the ankle!  Clearly, Onions ordered better.

I helped out as the portion was SO LARGE!  After finishing lunch, we drove south and made a quick visit to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a famous German ski resort that hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics.
