Great Ocean Road Day 2

Day 2 of the Great Ocean Road began with more of the windswept coastline of Cape Otway, the second most southern point of the Australian continent.

The Great Ocean Road goes inland for miles at a time, but at places like Glenaire, it touches the coast for a bit and the views are spectacular!

And then, driving from east to west, at Gibson Steps begins 50km of coastline which is the Great Ocean Road's main event!

At Gibson Steps is the one of the few places where you can walk down onto the beach!

And then the 12 Apostles, which is what everyone comes to see.  There actually aren't 12 and some of them are nubs as they have collapsed into the sea.  Of all the places to stop on the Great Ocean Road, the 12 Apostles was actually the least spectacular!

Other pullouts were virtually empty, such as Loch and Gorge!

The weather changed by the minute, providing great sunlight at times, and mist at others.  Here's we've got both....with a rainbow in the distance!

The wind was blowing and the waves were huge!

The Arch!

London Bridge (ok yes, I used vivid color, but it was near the end of the day!)

After a night in the tiny town of Peterborough, our last stop was the Bay of Martyrs.  I was so tempted to climb over the fence and walk out to the point, but it was the same day two tourists had died doing the same thing in Portugal....and I had a bad feeling I would be another victim of bad footing, so I stayed put!

The Bay of Martyrs as the clouds rolled in.

The drive back to Melbourne took us inland through beautiful stands of trees.

Our last scene in Australia before New Zealand....
