Mossman Gorge of the Daintree Rainforest

Up in the northern portion of Queensland (which is surprisingly close to Papua New Guinea) is the worlds oldest (how do they determine this) ancient rainforest!  Mossman Gorge is part of the Daintree National Rainforest, which is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Site.

Entering into.....the rainforest!

The rainforest.....creates its own climate.  Overcast and rainy is the name of the game!

As you might expect, every surface is covered with some kind of plant.  In the Daintree, the claim is that there are 30,000 species of plant in just one hectare!  I'm pretty sure they all looked the same to me.

EVERYTHING that doesn't move is covered in moss.

If you look up into the trees, you see these "baskets" of leaves.  These leaves capture the water that form on the upper canopy leaves, therefore other plants live in the upper canopy.

Because of that, much water doesn't make it to the floor and so the trees have adapted by increasing the surface area of their roots.  It's competition, baby!  I LOVED the trees and their crazy root structures.

LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THIS FIG TREE!!!
