Kenai Fjords National Parks -- Fjords and Glaciers

The entire second day of our trip was given over to an all day cruise to see the fjords, wildlife and the Northwestern Glacier (named for the University by the original researchers from Northwestern).  Our journey took us from Seward (where the red lines are) out Resurrection Bay through the Chiswell Islands and then up Harris Bay.  Nine hours round trip.

Sunrise over Seward's small boat harbor

First thing...a sea otter eating breakfast.  Max zoom on the iPhone quality is lacking. So, I guess this is why people carry those massive zoom lenses!

Leaving Resurrection Bay

Whale waiting is more like it...but credit to Onions for the patience to capture this whale tail as it dove down.

Bear Glacier with it's central lateral moraine

Entering Harris Bay....it's going to be glacier picture after glacier picture!  You can see we had perfect weather.

There is is....the Northwestern glacier which has retreated over a mile in the past century.

Glacier Blue!  Plus we could hear and see the glacier calving pieces into the water.  We didn't see any massive pieces, but it was still a spectacular experience.

Looking back out Harris Bay.  This is the view from Northwestern glacier

Sea Lions saving their energy by hitching a ride on glacial ice.

Puffins

A whale was playing right by our boat, flapping it's fin over and over.  So cool!

Common Murres...looking a lot like penguins

What a day.....it was one of the two times I wore by puffy jacket.  But after nine hours on the boat, I was ready to get back on land.  The plan to go our fishing....I decided I was done with boats for a while.
