Sometimes a broken plate Is MUCH more than just a broken plate

I came back into the office from teaching and I found this broken plate (that's Xi Jinping FYI) on a desk.  I took this photo and then posted it on WeChat (think Facebook and WhatsApp combined) with the words "Symbolism?" and "Foreshadowing?" in both English and Chinese.  Then this conversation occurred about 30 minutes after with Onions.

So the thing I forgot is that I still don't necessarily have the same "freedom of speech" rights that I do at home.  I simply don't have the filtering that Onions has grown up with. As I've learned with Onions, politics, the history of China, US-China relations and now the future of China are topics that he and I come to from completely different places. When we discuss it we both leave the conversation shaking our heads in disbelief at what the other is saying and believes.  However, in this case, Onions was right to call me out. Politics is NOT something to joke about in a public setting...especially when it is subversively making fun of the party and government.  Plus it's cute how he is always looking out for me.
