Nuremburg -- Weekend with the Ehrenbeck's

After spending the week taking care of errands (paying rent to my new landlord, meeting with my colleague as AOSR and changing my phone plans),events (picking cherries and dinner with friends, lunch at a colleagues house) and exercise, I flew to Nuremburg to visit Uli and his family. The weekend was just a weekend with this family. We walked around historic Nuremburg, visited family and went to a party with friends. Alas, the biggest challenge was trying to speak German, but it all coming out in Italian.

At the north end of Altstadt, on the highest point in the city sits the Imperial Castle. Nuremburg is historically important in the medieval days for being the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. It was here in this castle where the Imperial Diets met.

The Pegnitz River flows through town, this is the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, founded in 1332 and was one of the largest hospitals of the Middle Ages as it housed lepers. It is now a hospice and restaurant.

In the Hauptmarkt, stands the Frauenkirche. This square is home of the famous Christmas Market (note to self, need to come back during the holidays).

The Schonen Brunnen, or beautiful fountain, also in the Hauptmarkt.

Legend states that if you spin this gold ring three times, you will have good luck.

Spin this black ring and it will bring you fertility. I learned this AFTER I spun it!

It was great to visit Alex's family in Erlangen, where we went to drop off Josephina and Jonah with their grandparents. That night, Alex, Uli and I rode bikes across town to a party. The next day, after breakfast with Alex's parents to pick up the kids, we went to go visit Uli's Mom who is in a rehab facility recovering from a fall. It was great to see my German Mom again. (Wow, I have now both a German and Italian Mother to go along with my real Mom). After that, the plan was to go to the luge park, but we ran out of time, so we ended up at a "mountaintop" beer garden and then went to eat hearty traditional German food at a favorite local brewery of Uli's in Pretzfeld.

Uli and Alex enjoying an early summer Bavarian (more specifically Franconian) day with a beer at an outdoor biergarten on the top of a local mountain.
