Castagna = Chestnuts

Right now, this is a scene on almost every street in Central Italy. They are the outer husks of chestnuts, which are being harvested (or picked up off the side of the street) this time of year.

So, the Italians throw a festival, like this Chestnut festival in the town of Canepina

The chestnuts grow inside one of these prickly pods. They fall off the trees and open up and inside you will find....

Beautiful brown chestnuts

To be eaten, the chestnuts must be roasted, as in "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."

You buy a bowl of roasted chestnuts and then...

Peel and you're ready to pop it into your mouth. Because chestnuts were so plentiful in the years after WWII, it is known that locals made chestnut flour.

Part of my old Italian Men series

A corteo (parade) wound through the streets.

Doesn't this guy just look the part.

The corteo ends here in this plaza and then a great show of flag turning and tossing was put on. This clip is 30 seconds but the good stuff is at the end. Enjoy.

It's a mortar, not a pestle.
