Neuschawanstein and Hohenschwangau

The Neuschwanstein Castle!  We made it.

Pro-tip, reserve your tickets online, or get there EARLY!  We managed to get the second tour of the day at 10:10AM.  We arrived at 8AM, had our tickets in hand by 8:35AM and then walked up the hill (half hour) to the entrance of the castle.

The day was overcast.....but the views from these foothills of the Alps were still pretty spectacular.

The famed "Marienbrucke," from which you can get the famous view of Neuschwanstein, was inaccessible due to icy conditions.

The Neuschwanstein castle was built by Ludwig II, the last Bavarian prince, in the late 1800's.  It actually is still incomplete as Ludwig passed before completion.

The tours are efficient, to say the least.  You are in a group of 60, each of us with and audio headset.  The group moves from room to room listening to the guide.  We most of the private quarters and the dining areas.  35 minutes from entrance to exit.

We splurged on a horse carriage ride down to the base of the hill.

After lunch, we toured the original summer home of the Bavarian royal family, Hohenschwangau.  It was in this family castle, that Ludwig II, looked across the way, saw the mountain upon which we wanted to build, and did build, Neuschwanstein.  After touring the castles, Onions and I spent the afternoon at a spa in nearby Fussen, enjoying lots of time in the sauna.
